In the last months of my pregnancy, for obvious reasons, I didn't work out as vigorously as I did pre-preganancy.
After I had my son, I wanted to loose the baby weight real bad! I missed the adrenaline of reaching that 5th mile after a long run, finishing off that last crunch after a bootcamp class, and getting the "day-after" muscle soreness that reminds you that your workout has paid off and your muscles are changing.

Since I had canceled my gym membership during my pregnancy (no need to pay $15 a month for no reason right?) my only options were working out at home.

So I started to look at youtube videos of simple 15 minute workouts that I could do in my garage or living room (fitness blender is a-m-a-z-i-n-g.)
The video above will give you some samples of how I use my baby to workout, and how I handle other mommy duties... enjoy!

by Elia Esparza

Sitting at one end of the ¡HOLA LA! table is none other than multiple-Emmy Award winning journalist, Naibe Reynoso!
So,
what does Naibe bring to the table? A wealth of broadcasting and
television experience mixed with her entertainment savvy and quick wit…
well it makes for one unique voice.
First things first, how do you pronounce your name?
Naibe: NIE – E – BEH. I believe the origin of my name is
Lebanese. Someone once told me it meant ‘female warrior.’ Not sure if
that’s really what it means but I like it and sticking to it! However,
upon further digging Naibe is derived from the original name Najibe or
Najib or Nahibe something like that… my parents knew a Lebanese family
and that was the name of one of their daughters names and my mom changed
the spelling to Naibe (thank God she picked a “b” and not a “v” LOL).
MAKE APPLE PIE!

The corner of my kitchen has a fruit bowl-- with LOTS of Apples... Although "an apple a day keeps the Dr. away" an apple a day also makes you "sick" of apples! So when I found that the dozens of apples were starting to wilt, I decided to make Apple Pie!

I don't have a recipe up my sleeve so I have to rely on good'ol google to help... After looking at a few recipes Bobby Flay's seemed to be the easiest. Plus, I LOVE me some Bobby Flay. And it was super easy! For the recipe click here: APPLE PIE RECIPE

STEP 1: peel 5 apples

STEP 2: make the crust with butter (as a substitute for vegetable shortening which I didn't have in my fridge), flour, salt, egg, water, vinegar

STEP 3: cut the Apples and mix with sugar, flour and cinamon, and place in the raw crust

STEP 4: place in the oven for 30-40 minutes... and Voila...

Olga is one of the stars of "Iris". She plays Scarlett, a woman who is chasing an impossible love. She is originally from Russia and she does complicated acrobatic moves during the show. She told me she has to warm up for one hour before every performance.

For Olga, looking beautiful and standing on one hand come natural.
During her warm up, she invited me to join her. Needless to say, the "warm up" was probably the most complicated acrobatic move I've ever done!

Cirque du Soleil never fails to impress. The beautiful stories told and the artistic and amazing way the performers contort and move their bodies make me in awe of how miraculous the human body and spirit truly are. This is not your grandpa's circus.
Lights turn into motion, the curtain is pulled back, and the show begins... IRIS now in previews... Premieres September 25th which just so happens to be my Birthday!!!

Ok, Eva Longoria doesn't really look scared here. But only she can pull off a sexy, sophisticated and stylish look while being surrounded by a bloody bunny carrying a chainsaw and two other ghoulish creatures.

Longoria visited Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood along with friends including hairstylist to the stars Ken Paves. I gotta give the girl props. She has time to be part of Obamas political campaign, produce a show (Devious Maids), manage her acting career and still make some room for Halloween fun.
My favorite one was Alice Cooper goes to Hell in 3D. Visitors actually have to wear 3D glasses as you walk through rooms decked out to represent, purgatory, limbo, each of the seven deadly sins (lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy and pride) and the final frozen level of hell. Cooper's music is heard in the background.
When I found out I was pregnant, my search for interesting and informative pregnancy books began. It was overwhelming! There were hundreds of books to pick and choose from and my fears of being a good mom began: Am I picking the right books to prepare me for this? Am I missing out on a must-have read that all other mommies are tuned into?

Then my husband reminded me, mothers have been having happy, healthy children for thousands and thousands of years, before books were even invented. So when the pressure faded, I just used my motherly instinct and read the books I naturally gravitated toward.

My daughter Giselle's 9th birthday. I was still at the hospital on her birthday, so I decided to celebrate it in my recovery room. We decorated it with balloons, signs, and yes, even lit candles on her cake. Thank God the fire alarms at Cedar's Sinai Hospital didn't go off. I want to thank my in-laws John and Jackie for helping make Giselle's birthday so special. Her biggest present was her new little brother. My lesson: I had worried that I wasn't going to be able to celebrate my daughters Birthday, but with creativity, help from family, and lots of love, you can make anything happen!

Wow, this was only 10 days post-c-section delivery. Should I stay home and recover? Nah! I decided to go ahead and cover the event, after all, I thought of all the other women around the world that live in third world countries and have to get up and work days after having a baby. Im not a wimp, Im a warrior! The added bonus of attending was that my co-hosts for the Latina Talk Show "HOLA L.A." which will air on KCAL/KCBS, and I were asked to walk the red carpet as Talent to promote the show! MY LESSON: when you work in the Industry, rain, sleet or snow, "The show must go on!"

Sep 25, 2012- MY BIRTHDAY!

I turned 30-something... Another year older, and hopefully wiser! What more could I want with a new baby and a new show? Well, life has no meaning without people to share it with. So my best girlfriends took me to my own "Tea Party" at the American Tea Room in Beverly Hills. I got a little break from my baby, and got to catch up with the girls. My husband also took me to dinner to my favorite L.A. Restaurant "The Bazaar" at SLS Hotel. Hey, just because we are new parents doesn't mean we cant "date" anymore!
My hats off to show creator Bel Hernandez-Castillo, who decided to put the show together on her own, seeing that networks weren't providing a Latina perspective on current Talk Shows.

"What are you thinking Amy? The question I've asked most often during our marriage, if not out loud, if not to the person who could answer. I suppose these questions stormcloud over every marriage: What are you thinking? How are you feeling? Who are you? What have we done to eachother? What will we do?" - EXCERPT "GONE GIRL" By Gillian Flynn

I just finished reading "Gone Girl" a psychological thriller by best selling author Gillian Flynn (more on the book in a minute.)

Every night before I go to bed, I cuddle up to a book either on my Iphone or my Ipad. The electronic device is not as soft or pliable as a paper book but the convenience of reading on my Iphone is too tempting to pass up.

I used to read paperbacks and I had a little book light that I would have to clip onto the sleeve of the book, but the flaps were flimsy and usually I would have to move the light with my hands like a flashlight so it could light up the next paragraph I was reading.

The upside of reading on my electronic device: my Iphone has a built-in light eliminating the need for a book light, I store all the books I've purchased on my device so I can always choose to read two or three books at a time without lugging them around or having my nightstand look like a makeshift library, and finally if I happen to finish a book quickly I can buy another one instantly using my Ibooks app and read the reviews right then and there.

The downside: I can't let my sister or friends borrow the books I've purchased because its impossible to download the book on your computer, transfer it to a zip-drive and then let someone else read it. (I'm sure there is a way to do it but it also just doesn't feel right in this era of out-of-control DVD pirating.) Plus handing over a zip-drive doesn't feel as organic as does handing over an actual physical book and saying ,"hey sis, check out out this novel, it's a page turner."

Gone Girl, was a real page turner. I read it relatively fast because I couldn't put it down. There are lots of plot twists and turns and I really enjoyed the fact that Amy the main character is a strong woman. Well, strong in certain ways... if you read the book you'll know what I mean. My sister recently celebrated a birthday and I loved Gone Girl so much I actually went to a brick and mortar store, bought a hardcover copy and gave it to her as a gift.

I highly recommend Gone Girl, although I was a little disappointed in the ending, the smart writing and original plot still made it worthwhile. The book was acquired by 20th Century Fox and is expected to be turned into a Hollywood Movie by Reese Witherspoon's company, Pacific Standard. This is one movie ticket I will certainly purchase, but Im glad I read the book first.

I'm not quite sure how to feel about this.

As all moms and dads know, parenthood is a topsy-turvy world. Much like the fun-houses you enter at a Carnival, you are constantly being surprised by unexpected twists and turns, albeit in a colorful and "fun" environment. A place you entered at your own will, knowing sometimes the "fun house" will make your heart jump and your adrenaline speed up.

Sometimes you think you're doing a good job as a parent, but then you look in the mirror and you see a distorted version of yourself- in other words- you're not sure how "good" or "bad" of a job you're doing.

This week, I had an incident happen to me.

Sometimes I reward my daughter's achievements with "prizes" in the form of gifts, money, or promises to take her to the movies with popcorn and soda to boot. Well, if you choose to call it a bribe, so be it.

But on Friday, my daughter turned the tables around and I was just not quite sure how to react.

Basically, she got a bad mark on her behavior sheet which means she talked out of turn in class. Every day, parents are to sign this sheet so you can monitor your kids daily behavior and read the teachers comments to see what kind of misbehavin' they've done so you can apply the appropriate lesson at home.

Before my daughter handed over her behavior sheet so I could sign it, she told me, "before you see it, mom could I give you $5.00 so you won't be upset?" With that pre-emptive strike I knew I was probably going to see something I didn't like, but how should I feel about my 8 year old child bribing me?

I had mixed feelings. First, I appreciated her creative spirit. She anticipated a conflict and before facing it, thought it out and figured out a plan about how to mitigate it before it got ugly. Second she demonstrated an entrepreneurial side, hey if money gives you rewards, then money can also help you "buy" your way out of a problem.

But how should I feel, as the parent. My mixed reactions also included, "Oh, no! Have I been teaching her that money can 'allow' you to be 'bad' in class as you can 'buy' your way out of trouble?"

I took the money, and gave her a disapproving smirk. I know at this young age, she values money as I always make her save it and buy most of her own stuff like toys and other miscellaneous knick knacks.

I know giving up an entire $5.00 was slightly painful for her, and punishment in and of itself. Much like many parents have "swearing jars" at home, where you need to put a quarter in the jar every time you swear, I figured, for her giving up a weeks worth of A's and good behavior on her sheet was something that probably pained her.

But she was not completely out of the woods yet. The next morning as I drove her to school, I started lecturing her on how she needed to behave in class, not talk out of turn, yadda yadda yadda.

As she exited the car, she said, "mom, you are lecturing me, so now you owe me my $5.00 back.!"

PARENTHOOD... quite the fun house it is... But I'm keeping the money.

When my in-laws were visiting this weekend from Colorado, Tiny (my husband's nickname for his mom) wanted to take advantage of the beautiful California Coastline (and who can blame her) and have lunch somewhere near the water. You also get to wear a cute bib, so in ways I felt like a toddler all over again- eating with my fingers and wearing a bib! I'm 8 months pregnant so I'm about to go through the "messy eating-wearing bib" stage with a real live baby in just a few weeks, so it was nice to feel like a kid again myself before I need to be a real adult and take care of a little one.

"There are people in here who want me dead, some for retribution but most to establish their own notoriety. It would be a sure path to celebrity to kill me or one of my friends, known collectively as the Monte Carlo Mistresses. That was the moniker that stuck in the international media."
- EXCERPT from the book "Guilty Wives" by James Patterson & David Ellis

MY "GUILTY WIVES"BOOK REVIEW.

I've never been into James Patterson novels. Mainly because I would much rather read biographies and memoirs because most of them are about successful people and how they handled adversity. I love reading about real people, real situations, real outcomes.

But... once in a while I indulge in the 'guilty' pleasure of reading fiction. I was first attracted to this book because of it's title. The words guilty wives conjures so many different emotions. Ohhhh the shame of being a guilty wife. But guilty of what? Perhaps guilty of not being the "perfect" wife? Not being as crafty as Martha Stewart? As good of a cook as Paula Dean? As good looking as Gisele Bundchen? As smart as Condoleezza Rice? As politically savvy as Hilary Clinton? As alluring as Jacqueline Kennedy Onasis? As sweet looking as Katie Holmes? The list goes on.... Wow I'm GUILTY on all counts!

Well, hold on.. this book is about another type of guilt. Murder. Adultery. I would describe it as "Sex and the City" meets "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" meets "Beverly Hills Housewives."

"Guilty Wives" centers on four extremely wealthy women who are all married, and decide to take a girls weekend trip to Monte Carlo. Its like the rich people's version of Las Vegas. The book takes you directly into their world, and gives you a taste of what its like when you can do what you want when you want when money is not an issue. The girls party like rock stars in an exotic Hotel and end up spending an "interesting" night on a rich man's yacht. When they wake up, the President of France (who was partying with them) is found shot dead and the murder is linked to the four women.

Its a whodunit novel with a feminine twist. Once I started reading it, it was hard to put down. The books extravagant setting in Monte Carlo and Paris made the mystery even sweeter.

Yes... im Guilty... of loving this book.
When I met my future husband, I was 34 years old, and I already knew that at some point I wanted to have another child. Fast-forward a few years into our relationship and in a blink of an eye I was already 38, with my 40s looming just around the corner!

I like to take a breath. Fast forward 10 years from now and look at myself now, and tell myself... hmmm what could I have done differently? What are my regrets from the 2012 version of myself? What negative thoughts were self-defeating, useless and counter-productive?

Only then can I be objective and see things with a wider lens. The beauty of it is, you still have time to change your thoughts and actions because you ARE in the present.

Your "future-self" will always be wiser, because with time comes knowledge. Like my mom says "más sabe el Diablo por viejo que por Diablo."(The Devil knows more because he's old, not because he's the Devil.)

I like to listen to my "future-self." She is wiser, more beautiful, more traveled, more relaxed, and more comfortable in her own skin. Because time passed and she realized that her world didn't crash down on her when she didn't get "that job," that cutting off certain friendships really were for the best, and that with all its pitfalls, failures, and disappointments, life still is beautiful if you can learn to savor and appreciate it.

Doing this exercise in reverse can teach you valuable lessons as well.

-I would tell my 6 year old self things like "don't pay attention to criticism, you are unique, you are special." I would tell her things like "things will work out, you will do great things, and travel to amazing places."

-I would tell my 13 year old self, "its okay if you don't know what you want to do, you will figure it out for sure, use this time to explore and have fun."

-I would tell my 30 year old self, "you will find a great guy, have patience, open your eyes and you will eventually pick a good one!"

-And hopefully, one day I will tell my 70 year-old self "you have lived a rich life with purpose, love, adventure, you let all the negative energy that people threw at you bounce right off like a ball and even laughed at it a little, you surrounded yourself with people who loved and appreciated you, and Naibe, hold on cause you still have 20plus years left to go."
"For the next nearly six years, I always assumed I was being recorded in the car and at home. In fact, one of our housekeepers later told me that she had seen a small tape recorder under a side table in our bedroom. Of course, I was always careful to make sure the content of my conversations was very clear."
-EXCERPT from Book "Hiding from Reality"- By Taylor Armstrong.

I love reading memoirs and biographies. Although the whole hype of the Reality Show craze can be annoying sometimes, I have to admit some of my guilty pleasures include watching those shows. I guess its fun to see how women with limitless budgets spend their time and money. Hey, its not my time or my money so spend away!! After a few episodes you realize a lot of these women don 't necessarily lead happy or less complicated lives. But they are fun to watch! They also cry and get angry, only they're in Louboutin heels and private jets. I guess some problems in life can be solved with money, and as my mother says "los problemas con pan son menos."In other words, the hard blows of life are softened with a hefty bank account. However, something like suicide, divorce and abuse will never be soft blows, no matter how much money you have.

When the news hit last year that Real Housewife of Beverly Hills Housewife Taylor Armstrong's husband Russell committed suicide, it reminded us all that these are real women, who are not immune to tragedy, death, and even a sudden change in their financial safety nest.

Taylor Armstrong and Me (Naibe) during an Interview

Armstrong eventually started to openly talk about the abuse she received by her husband, both emotionally and physically. Coming from a background of abuse myself, I was interested in her memoir, and reading about the details of what she went through, why she stayed, and how she is coping now as a single mother.

I was pleasantly surprised by her candidness and how well written the book was. Of course I know celebrities who write memories have ghost writers and editors that help guide them so each sentence sounds polished and perfect. But I have read other memories that appeared to be written by a Junior High School version of themselves (I love ya Kyle Richards but your memoir needs help.)

I actually got to meet Taylor in person during one of my assignments. I was covering a swanky gifting lounge at the London Hotel and she was looking at hats. She even helped me pick one out and placed it on my head with a slight angle so it wouldn't look so dorky.

I wish her and her daughter well, and I hope her book makes other women in abusive relationships realize that they need to, have to, and must get out- before tragedy strikes them or a loved one around them.
This weekend I went to San Francisco to watch my little sister graduate from one of the best Universities of our country: UC Berkeley.

Of course we decided to make an entire weekend trip out of it so my husband Jeff, my daughter Giselle and I went to visit some cool San Fran Spots.
First stop, Sausalito! Sausalito is a San Francisco Bay Area city, in Marin County, California. The community is situated near the northern end of the Golden Gate Bridge. It's a quaint, quiet town with lots of cyclists and cool shops. We had dinner at Scoma- yummy!

Second stop. Berkeley!
Berkeley is the site of the University of California, Berkeley, the oldest of the University of California system. My sister graduated with a degree in Latin American studies. In this unique ceremony my parents got a chance to walk with her on stage and accompany her as she accepted her diploma. They didn't get to graduate from College themselves because they had to work at a young age to help out the family. Never would my mom and pop ever imagine they would walk proudly on a Berkeley stage and accept such a high honor. Remember: Anything is possible! Let's dream big. We were all so proud of her.

Reynoso Sisters- Proud University Graduates!

My parents now have the privilege of saying all of their four daughters have graduated from prestigious Universities. One from Loyola Marymount, two from UCLA (and one moving on to UCLA LAW School), and another from Berkeley. Needless to say, you guys did a great job!

Third stop. Fisherman's Wharf. Its a must stop for tourists visiting San Francisco. We got to see sea lions, eat sea scallops and savor sourdough bread (more on that below!)
There are lots of fun specialty shops that sell everything from barrels of candy, to magic tricks. I bought a few salted taffy candies, they have so many different flavors ranging from hot chocolate to bacon maple syrup. Jeff bought me an oyster with a pearl inside that you can turn into a necklace as part of my mothers day gift. The lady told us our "pearl" was a boy, awww just like the one we will be welcoming in a few months.
While you wait for your table you can visit the Sourdough museum that gives you a history and science lesson on Sourdough bread. Did you know that Sourdough bread was started by Parisian bakers that moved to San Francisco in 1849? When they tried to make traditional French bread, Wild yeasts in the San Francisco air imparted a unique tang to their traditional bread, giving rise to “San Francisco sourdough French bread" and the mouth-watering, sour-tasting bread was born.

"The Miracle of Spanish Harlem" is an independent movie starring Kate del Castillo and Luis Antonio Ramos. I was lucky enough to meet both the Writer Carlos Bermudez and the Director Derek Partridge during last months Hispanicize event held in beautiful Miami.

Both Bermudez and Patridge are talented latinos that have worked behind the camera for many years, and are examples of how much our community has to give to Hollywood. During a causal conversation during small breaks at Hispanicize, we talked about family, life in general, and best of all, the PASSION we all share in doing what we love doing.

I already shared with you that I have my own "bun in the oven," since I'm officially 21 weeks pregnant.

The baby is now the size of a BANANA! Weighing approximately 12.70 ounces and measuring about 10.51 inches long from crown to heel.

Speaking of Bananas, I had a few ripe ones in the kitchen and my hubby, being the green guy (and gringo) that he is, suggested we should recycle them in some way. DING! Light bulb moment... Banana Bread!

It is one of the easiest recipes I've ever done. All you need is sugar, vanilla extract, baking soda, flour, butter, eggs and of course...ripe bananas.

My baby actually got to "reap" the benefits of the my banana bread, because by this stage of pregnancy, the fetus is able to taste the food I eat as well..

Now you can have your OWN "bun in the oven" but instead of waiting 9 months, you can cuddle with a loaf of deliciousness in only 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Happy baking!

-EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK "Bloom: finding beauty in the unexpected" a Memoir by Kelle Hampton.

I absolutely devoured this book in just a few days. First of all, it was written by a fellow blogger Kelle Hampton, who is obviously an extremely talented writer and manages to express her thoughts in poetic yet poignant ways.

"Bloom" is her memoir which chronicles her struggle to cope, accept, and embrace her newborn daughter who was unexpectedly born with Down Syndrome.

Hampton struggles to bond with her precious baby, but learns to "find beauty in the unexpected."
Her book is inspiring and provides great insight on how to create a life full of miracles and blessings, even in the moments you think the world is crashing down on you.

Readers can definitely apply her wisdom to any "unexpected" life events that may cross their path.

Here is a link to her incredible blog apply called "enjoying the small things" Kelle Hampton Blog

Here is a link to buy the book! Get Bloom!
be happy at home and never fly, never travel?" Then you start thinking of how
much you love your life and those in it and how you hope the bumps will cease
and your plane will land safely. When it does, you feel grateful . So grateful

We had a special treat as Andy Garcia himself appeared after the screening to do Q & A session with those of us in the audience. (FYI: he was one of my first Hollywood crushes!) Some people congratulated him for bringing the little talked about Cristeros story to life. Many Mexicans lost their life during the battle, defending their rights of freedom of religion, in essence, their freedom of expression.

Eva Longoria plays his wife, and other actors like Nestor Carbonell and Eduardo Verastegui are also in the film.
He landed in Miami in the 70's as part of the Cuban exile community and his real name is Esteban Ernesto Echevarría Samson, but his father encouraged him to change his name so people could pronounce it. "Bauer", Steven said at the panel had a nice ring to it. The self-proclaimed bad boy has also been seen in hits like "Primal Fear", "Traffic" and "Breaking Bad".
TIM MCNEAL
His title, pretty much says it all: Vice President of Talent Development and Diversity at ABC, 'nuff said. His job is basically to seek out diverse talent, reel them in, and have them sign development deals with ABC/Disney. Gina Rodriguez currently has such deal at ABC, and trust me it's well deserved.

Hearing all of their stories was very inspiring, because whether you want to be an actress, agent, or lawyer, or pediatrician-the message was the same: GO FOR IT! Follow your heart, follow your passion, don't give up- and create your own "Star Making Role" whatever that may mean for you!

Kiki Hug

Ever since I met her, she's always been non-stop. Producing comedy shows like "Hot Tamales Live" featuring Eva Longoria. Hosting her own show "Kiki desde Hollywood" where she interviewed the likes of Aaron Spelling and asked him where were all the Latinos in Melrose Place? And nurturing new talent for future projects like Cuban comedian Conrado Bonco (keep your eye out for him!).

She's a go-getter, she has what Latinos call "cojones", what Jewish may call "chutzpah" and what gringos call "balls." She knows what she wants, but doesn't expect anything to be handed to her on a silver platter.
These are the things we can see in her Docucomedy "The Journey of a Female Comic-La Trayectoria De Una Comediante" (which she also directed and produced). We also see the small town in the Dominican Republic where she is originally from, and learn to appreciate her journey to Hollywood.

The life of a Latina female entertainer in America does not come with any guarantees or any easy paths. In Kiki Melendez' story, she has gone through plenty of disappointments, rejections and heartbreaks, Featured Cast: Maria Conchita Alonzo, Marc Anthony, John Travolta, Esai Morales, Lupe Ontiveros, Nadine Velasquez, Jacob Vargas.

Kiki is a trailblazer that hasn't gotten enough credit from Hollywood but she's a force of nature that the glitzy town can't ignore for long.
